Human struggle against adversity -- such was the homestead period that followed the Homestead Act of 1909, when settlers rushed to the High Desert of Central Oregon, lured by the prospect of free land. They found the desert was not to be tamed. Most of them departed after a few years of wrestling with the soil, climate and pests; only a few remained. Here is the story of that strange and desperate time, and of one heroic family that survived. Many historic photos. Index. 144 pages.
